Common Questions & Answers

Why Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is more than just a beautiful smile! Orthodontic treatment can:

  • Prevent serious oral health problems by addressing gaps, over-crowding, and misaligned bites
  • Reduce jaw pain, headaches, and breathing concerns
  • Make brushing and flossing easier
  • Help you speak and chew better
  • Give you the confidence boost you need!
Why Choose an Orthodontist?

Orthodontists are dentists who specialize in ensuring proper tooth movement, alignment, and jaw growth. After completing 4 years of dental school, orthodontists spend an additional 2-3 years of education to specialize in moving teeth! They stay up-to-date with the latest practices through ongoing education to ensure that they provide the best possible care.

Do I Need a Dentist Referral?

No! Our doctors love referrals from our dental colleagues, but the dentist does not need to make the appointment. Most patients call us directly and mention the dentist to whom we can thank them for referring them!

Can I Play Sports with Braces?

Yes! It’s recommended to use a mouth guard to protect your teeth and braces, which can be found at sports stores, in the dental section of stores, or as custom options from dentists.

Can I Refer My Friends for a Consultation?

Absolutely! We welcome friends of current patients to visit our office.

Do I Still Need to See My Dentist During Treatment?

Yes. Your dentist plays a crucial role in your overall oral health, continuing exams, cleanings, and any necessary dental work during orthodontic treatment.

Will Insurance Cover Everything?

Insurance varies by plan and typically covers a portion, not the total fee. We provide an estimate of coverage during your consultation.

Do You Bill Insurance Directly?

Yes, we do. We also accept direct payments for your convenience.

Do You Offer Payment Plans?

Yes, we offer flexible payment options, including interest-free plans that accommodate most budgets. Details are discussed during your initial consultation.

When Should I Schedule an Appointment?

Children: The American Association of Orthodontics suggests an evaluation by age 7 to assess orthodontic needs early, potentially avoiding more complex treatments later.

Adults: Anytime! Whether for cosmetic reasons, dental implants, or corrective procedures, schedule a consultation to discuss your options.

Will My Child’s Teeth Grow Straight Naturally?

Not necessarily. Genetics, habits like thumb sucking, and other factors can affect tooth development. Early intervention allows us to guide growth and create space for crowded teeth.

Do Braces Hurt?

Braces may cause temporary discomfort, similar to muscle soreness after exercise. We recommend maintaining a normal diet after adjustments and suggest using pain relief as needed.

Do You Administer Shots?

No, routine orthodontic treatment does not require shots.

How Long Is Treatment?

Treatment duration varies (6-30 months) based on individual needs, which were discussed in your initial consultation. Regular appointments and home care ensure treatment stays on track.

Will I Need Teeth Removed?

Treatment plans may vary. Severe crowding may require tooth removal, which will be addressed during your consultation. Less than 10% of our patients require extractions.

When Can I Schedule Appointments?

We schedule appointments Monday to Friday, with morning appointments for certain procedures. Early morning and late afternoon options accommodate various schedules.

Can I Return to Work or School After Appointments?

Yes. Soreness may occur but typically doesn’t prevent a return to daily activities.

How Often Are Appointments?

Usually, adjustments are needed every 6-10 weeks. Your next appointment is scheduled before you leave our office after each visit.

Can I Get Braces with Crowns, Missing Teeth, or Baby Teeth as an Adult?

Yes! We discuss these concerns during your consultation to offer the best treatment options.
